East Coast Earthquake Prompts President to Propose a New Stimulus Package

In response to today’s East Coast earthquake that was felt from  as far South as Georgia and as far North as Canada, President Obama has proposed a new economic stimulus package.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced that the President has cancelled his Thursday morning golf game in Martha’s Vineyard to present to the people a new stimulus package that will create jobs and prevent future quakes from occurring along the Eastern seaboard.

The $938 billion package will finance a major excavation project designed to replace the old and worn tectonic plates which were responsible for causing Tuesday’s shifting of the earth.  According to Carney;

“The President has been consistently fighting for much needed and long overdue infrastructure maintenance and construction.  In the wake of the widely felt East Coast earthquake, it is clear to everyone that the President is correct.  Our U.S. tectonic plates have not undergone any major repairs at anytime in history.  It is long overdue”

Carney made it clear that the President will take his case to the people and  demonstrate that not only will this new spending create hundreds of thousands of much-needed new jobs, but is also an investment that saves lives.  The White House believes that if any President can stabilize the earth it is President Obama.

The President’s proposal calls for Vice President Joe Biden to head up the new project whic is being called Operaton Solid Ground.  The White House is also reaching out to former Congressman Anthony Weiner and requesting that he head up a special project division which will be responsible for monitoring the project and providing progress reports to Congress with the help of photographic evidence.

Another member of the Operation Solid Ground oversight committee will be former Vice President Al Gore.  Gore will be in charge of the projects Geothermal Restructuring division.  This division will attempt to combat global warming by lining the tectonic plates with a complex maze of cooling systems that will regulate the earth’s core temperature.

Jay Carney pointed out that the President was of the opinion that while we’re down there, we mine as well take advantage of the opportunity to combat global warming too .

When made aware of the new Obama initiative, Speaker of the House John Boehner became unavailable for comment as his jaw dropped and he became speechless.

In her own response, Democratic National Committee Chair, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz announced that she is proud of the President’s bold leadership which kills two birds with one stone by not only pumping more money into our economy and creating  jobs, but by also finally fixing the earth. According to Wasserman-Schultz;

“Not since Moses split the Red Sea has a leader undertaken such a massive and lofty initiative.  Thanks to him, our nation and the world will be a much better place for the effort”

In a related story, upon hearing the news of the new stimulus initiative, the credit rating agencies Moody’s and Fitch joined with Standards & Poors’ in their recent decision to downgrade the U.S. credit rating.  All three of the major credit rating services downgraded the U.S. to an NH-.  This is a newly created rating that stands for “No Hope”.  Treasury Secretary Gietner responded to the move optimistically  and said that he believes we will be upgraded to an NH+ in no time at all.

The Funny Side Of Politics, As Shown By Zolitics

Bookmark and Share   Zolitics.

Yup. Zolitics. You read that right. Zolitics not politics.

It is a new network. The world’s first political entertainment network. For more details about it, check out this previous POLITICS 24/7 post  about it. But to see the fist three episodes of Zolitics premier sit-com “Moving Numbers”, just scroll down and enjoy.

Moving Numbers is an original series that deals with a fictional U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania. Anyone who has ever been on the inside of campaign can, in one way or another, relate to the events depicted in the series. Those who haven’t been on the inside do get a glimpse at the less technical and often farcical side of campaigns.

Moving Numbers is not rocket science but it is also not meant to be, but for what its worth, it’s an amusing break from the often intensely contentious side of politics that we engage in or are witness to.

Personally, I like both the concept of Zolitics.com and their product and I wish them much success. Hopefully you too will find Zolitics and Moving Numbers an entertaining break from the usual.

AND YOU THOUGHT BERNIE MADOFF WAS A CRIMINAL

antscrewedBookmark and Share       Maybe, just maybe Republicans are getting back on track.
Not a single Republican in the House of Representatives voted for the $819 billion so called economic recovery package.

For that I am proud.

I am proud of the fact that Republicans objected to what is the largest bill of its kind in history. A bill that is suppose to be considered a stimulus package but is actually a liberal spending program that is filled with pork, patronage and pathetic excuses.

More than 70 percent of all the spending that was approved in this bill should have been individual expenditures that were taken up, debated and voted on in their own right.

Most of the spending in this historic bill is not at all related to stimulating the economy and that which is designed to stimulate the economy will not take effect for years as is the case for monies dedicated to highways and school construction.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office states “much of the stimulus may not come until after the economy has begun to recover”.

According to the C.B.O. $5 billion of the $30 billion set aside for highway spending would be spent within the next two years. About $2.6 billion of $18.5 billion for renewable energy programs would be spent by then. About $907 million of a $6 billion plan to expand broadband access in rural and other underserved areas would be spent by 2011.

In the mean time where is some of that money immediately going?

Well $335 million is going towards the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, $2.4 billion is going to a cap on carbon transmissions, $16 miliion for a smoking cessation measure, $50 million to the National Endowmnent for the Arts, $1 billion to Amtrak, $7.7 Billion to federal buildings, $600 million to federal cars and $400 million is going into the studying of global warming.

That does not include a myriad of personal pet projects that Democratic lawmakers are pumping into their own districts to help assure their reelections nor does it include the overnight doubling of the department of Educations budget.

This is not stimulus it is social engineering.

Under the auspices of an economic emergency Congress just approved the delivery of the worlds largest Christmas gift. Of course like everything else Congress does, it is late but to make matters worse it is defective.

For those of you who thought that Bernie Madoff’s ponzi scheme was a scandal of epic proportions, well you just witnessed a government ponzi scheme that makes Madoff’s offenses seem like petty theft.

Very little of what this program was meant for is what it is going towards. Very little.

So I am proud of congressional Republicans. They stood together and they stood on principle and voted against this federal economic scam. I only wish they kept their principles when they were in control of Congress and held the majority. If they had, perhaps today they would still be in control of the house.

As for liberals, had they scaled this scam back and put the money into infrastructure development and other operations that would have trickled out into the private sector and created jobs through the private sector, it would not be a scam and I might say that they were on the right road to recovery. But they didn’t. Under their leadership and design this stimulus package has little to do with stimulus and everything to do with expanding the size of government, expanding government programs and increasing government control .antscrewed3

On top of that, does anyone not see how much of this money will be wasted and unaccounted for?

The government is going to spend it. The same government that could not monitor the lending practices of their own FannieMaes or FreddieMacs. The same government that loses 20 cents on every dollar that they spend .

Ladies and gentlemen, we have just witnessed the world’s greatest and most elaborate crime. Without a single call to the police we just wittiness 244 Democrats in the House of Representatives rip us all off.

Those of you liberals who approve of this crime may claim that Republicans created the need or opportunity for this scandal to arise. You will claim that Republican policies got us here but I can assure you that Republicans did not create the crisis and after this vote, we did not make it worse.

Much of the economic crisis that we are experiencing was ushered in not because of the low unemployment rates that existed for the past 6 of the last eight years. This problems was ushered in by a banking crisis that largely began after an over inflated housing market bubble burst. The inability to pay back loans in this area created a tightening of the lending markets and that tightening cut off the flow of money as we knew it.

Much of the problem could have been avoided if Barney Franks and Chris Dodd took John McCain’s advice and reevaluated our lending practices and if we put a stop to the Clinton initiatives which forced banks to hand out sub prime loans to people who could not afford to pay these loans back, but they didn’t.

So here we are today, witnessing the same people who created the problem offer up their solution to the problem.

Well ladies and gentlemen they didn’t solve anything, they simply made the problem worse and robbed us blind in the process.

It just goes to show you that even getting screwed these days costs a lot more than it used to.

WHEW, NOW THAT GITMO IS CLOSING THINGS WILL FINALLY GET BETTER?

antguantanamo_photoBookmark and Share         So everyone wants to close down our terrorist prison operation on Guantanamo in Cuba.

I say “why the heck not”?

After all it has not helped matters much.

I mean why imprison suspects if you can’t charge them and detain them? Why arrest people who you are simply going to set free so that they can continue to plot, plan and participate in the mass murder of us.

And besides, there is not a neighborhood in America that wouldn’t welcome a terrorist prison camp in its midst. Right?
Who cares about the fact that more than 30 freed Guantanamo detainess have been either killed or recaptured after taking arms against allied forces in Pakistan and Afghanistan after being released from Guantanamo.

According to Commander Jeffrey Gordon, while in custody, detainees falsely claimed to be farmers, truck drivers, cooks, small-arms merchants, low-level combatants or had offered other false explanations for being in Afghanistan.

He added “We are aware of dozens of cases where they have returned to militant activities, participated in anti-US propaganda or engaged in other activities“.

So why hold prisoners in Guantanamo Bay?

Detaining prisoners of war only helps to become fodder for the left. Last year, much of the presidential race centered around hypothetical abuses of the rights of enemy combatants. Liberals tried to use these prisoners of war as tools which they used to paint Republicans as insensitive goons with.

So politics being the game that it is, forced the release of many of these Guantanamo Bay enemy combatants.

In some cases their arrests only helped to further the careers of these combatants.

Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Oufi

Prisoner #333 - aka:Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Oufi

Former inmates Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Oufi and Abu Sufyan al-Azdi al-Shahri,  known previously to us as prisoners number 333 and 372, respectively, recently surfaced in a new Al-Qaeda video. You know the jihadist version of the Girls Gone Wild videos we see so much of.

In that video, former U.S. prisoner number 372, Abu Sufyan al-Azdi al-Shahri said “By Allah, imprisonment only increased our persistence in our principles for which we went out, did jihad for, and were imprisoned for”.

In that same video it also became clear that al-Shihri was promoted for the time he sacrificed at Guantanamo. Now he is a senior member of Al-Quaeda’s leadership.

Doesn’t that make you feel good? It is nice to know that there exists a new government program to help disadvantaged terrorists further their career goals.

Priosoner #372

The Recently Promoted Abu Sufyan al-Azdi al-Shahri - aka: Priosoner #372

While we are closing down prisoner of war facilities and making it clear that we want to be friends with everyone, the Islamic extremists are continuing to arm themselves and plan strikes against us.

And while they are doing that, what are we doing?

We are making it easier for them to do it.

According to the Defense department 61 of 520 former Guantanamo detainees have returned to the field of battle.

What I want to know is how will we be better off when we discover that any one of those 61 former detainees were responsible for a suicide bomb that went off in Isreal and killed school children, or blew a hole in the side of an American passenger cruise ship, airliner or the Empire State Building?

This sense of renewed optimism that many perceive under the new administration is a wonderful thing but is there really anything to be optimistic about when we are extending a hand of friendship in the spirit of unity while at the same time we are getting slapped in the face in the war on terror.

A large group of Taliban soldiers are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a sand-dune.

One Texas soldier is better than ten Taliban“.

The Taliban commander quickly send 10 of his best soldiers over the dune whereupon a gun-battle breaks out an continues for a few minutes, then silence.

The voice then calls out “One Texan is better than one hundred Taliban”.

Furious, the Taliban commander sends his next best 100 troops over the dune and instantly a huge gunfight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence.

The Texan voice calls out again “One Texan is better than one thousand Taliban”.

The enraged Taliban commander musters one thousand fighters and sends them across the dune. Cannon, rocket and machine gun fire ring out as a huge battle is fought. Then silence. Eventually one wounded Taliban fighter crawls back over the dune and with his dying words tells his commander,

“Don’t send any more men, it’s a trap. There’s actually TWO of them.”

GOVERNOR TAKES QUESTIONS – Submit Yours

Governor Corzine will be taking your questions live on Thursday, January 22 at 8 PM

Governor Corzine will be taking your questions live on Thursday, January 22 at 8 PM

Bookmark and Share

On Thursday, February 22, Governor Jon Corzine will be a guest of respected New Jersey journalist Steve Adubato on his weekly show, Caucus: New Jersey . They will be taking questions for the Governor from the general public and answering them live, on the air.

Questions need to be submitted before hand, by clicking here or you can do so by through the link below:

http://www.nj.com/mailforms/askcorzine/

There you can ask the Governor any question that is on your mind and we at POLITICS 24/7 believe that it is an opportunity which everyone, especially Republicans, need to take advantage of.

Republicans should be creative and think along the lines of the campaign manager of their favorite Republican candidate for Governor. Set your question up in such a way that allows the Governor to walk right into the line of thinking that you can effectively hit him on.

Ask questions about the Governor’s decimation of the business environment, his lack of ethics, his tax increases and revenue shortfalls, his inability to reform government and why he is so partisan that he and his Democrat friends in the senate and assembly reject proposals for reform that Republicans propose?

One question which I have submitted is:

New Jersey's steve Adubato

New Jersey's Steve Adubato

“In your State of the State address, you warned of tough times ahead and you promised to reduce spending. You even said that municipalities will have to do more with less from the state. Yet after that promise, you promised to pay for the expansion pre-school educations for all. How do you make up for the budget deficit by spending less when at the same time you promise to spend more?”

Another question I asked goes like this:

“Shortly after you first took office, you raised taxes by almost $2 billion and now, at the end of your first term, we are faced with a shortfall of $2.1 billion. I am sure that, as a veteran of wall street, you can admit that that is not they type of business management that would be considered acceptable, so how do you defend these circumstances under your administration?”

There are plenty of questions that need to be asked. Not just by Republicans who already know that we need to get rid of Corzine but by all New Jersey citizens who want to improve life in the Garden State.

Of course, not every question submitted will be asked, the program is only an hour. On top of that, there is the some doubt regarding who actually picks the questions that will be asked. If Steve Adubato, I am sure the forum will be fair and that some of the tougher questions will be selected for the Governor to answer.

So take a chance.

You never know which question might produce an earth shifting answer
.
Who would have thought that a plumber from Ohio would become famous, write a book and be asked to run for Congress simply because he asked a question. A question which wound up consuming the last few weeks of the Presidential election.

A simple question during the qestioning of a President produced an impeachment after that President was found to have lied in his answer to one of those questions.

So you never know what the results could be. If you have the right question you may just become a part of recorded history. You could be responsible for changing events as opposed to our Governor who is constantly changed by events.

Give it a shot, submit your question to Caucus: New Jersey. And just in case it is not selected on their program, share it here, in the comments section, and let us know what you are wondering about?

Welcome To The George W. Bush Presidential Center

antbushlibrary Bookmark and Share      President George W. Bush may be out of office but the benefits of his leadership will last forever, at least that is what the George W. Bush Presidential Center hopes.

Keeping in tradition, the Bush Presidency will have itself a modern version of a presidential library. The tradition of such facilities can be dated back to 1885 and the wife of President James A. Garfield, who added a Memorial Library wing to their family home in Mentor, OH, four years after his assassination. But the presidential library system was officially launched by Franklin Delano Roosevelt after he donated his personal papers and federal documents to the federal government and pledged a portion of his Hyde Park, New York  estate for the purpose of housing them.

The George W. Bush museum will be housed on the campus of Southern Methodist University, near Dallas in the heart of Texas.

Among other things, it will house the official archive of President Bush’s presidential and gubernatorial records. It will also include the papers of key policy makers and cabinet members from his two terms in office.

As explained on a web site for the development of the museum “it will tell the story of the Bush presidency within the context of the historic challenges of the first decade of the 21st century and how President and Mrs. Bush worked to advance the core governing principles of freedom, opportunity, responsibility and compassion.”

Of course liberals will laugh at that mission statement but those of us who are not falling on the left side of the political spectrum, understand exactly what they mean. We understand that freedom is not a government program and that President Bush, although he had his lackluster areas of governance, did know the importance of freedom and recognized the challenges to it.

We understand that the freedom has a cost and that we must pay a price to achieve it and keep it.

Many of us appreciate the fact George W. Bush made the hard and sometimes unpopular decisions that history will show we were the beneficiaries of.

Unlike the caretaker leadership of Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush advanced the cause of freedom and defended it at home and abroad. Unlike some, President Bush never backed away from the tough decisions and although many offer him nothing but blame, many more understand that in our less than perfect world, less than desired efforts must be undertaken.

The multi purpose center will not only house a museum and library it will be the home of a policy institute that “will capitalize on the personal involvement of President and Mrs. Bush, its location on the campus of an important national university and its unique relationship to a presidential library and museum to attract scholars, intellectuals and leaders with experience in government, politics and various professions. It will invite a select number of Senior and Visiting Fellows and former world leaders to research, write and teach on important policy issues of the day and to work with task forces charged with generating practical policy initiatives on specific subjects.”

The policy institute will focus on such things as the promotion of freedom throughout the world and it will encourage the promotion of freedom as well as social entrepreneurship

Areas of focus will include the promotion of freedom throughout the world, encouraging through faith- and community-based organizations, and “reforming fundamental institutions of government to keep our country safe and our economy competitive and strong. The work product of the task forces and Fellows will be published by the Institute and promoted through lectures and seminars, with important task force topics coordinated with temporary exhibits at the museum.”

The Bush Presidential Center’s design will incorporate space for archival material, exhibition space, classrooms, social functions and a cafe.

The George W. Bush Policy Institute will house up to 25 Senior and Visiting Fellows and will also include conference facilities, a media studio, and offices for the Institute and the George W. Bush Foundation.

Groundbreaking on the facility is anticipated for late 2010. The dedication and opening of the facility is scheduled for 2013.

Donations to help fund construction of the George W. Bush Presidential Center you can simply click here .

The entire web site for the developing project can be viewed  by clicking here .

For those of us who believe in George W. Bush and appreciated his time in office now is our chance to help insure that the good work he has done and the direction he set us on is not ignored. Now is our chance to insure his rightful place in history as time sheds light on his efforts.

G.W. Bush And Bill Clinton Somehow Ended Up In the Same Barber Shop

As they sat there, each being worked on by a different barber, not a word was spoken. The barbers were both afraid to start a conversation, for fear it would turn to politics. As the barbers finished their shaves, the one who had Clinton in his chair reached for the aftershave.

Clinton was quick to stop him saying, ” No thanks, my wife Hillary will smell that and think I’ve been in a whorehouse”.

The second barber turned to Bush and said, “how about you?”

Bush replied, “Go ahead, my wife Laura doesn’t know what the inside of a whorehouse smells like.”

Chesley Sullenberger III, crash landed US Airway flight into Hudson River in New York

Chesley Sullenberger III, crash landed US Airway flight into Hudson River in New York

This afternoon, one such event occurred in New York’s Hudson River.

Three minutes after taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport  in  Queens U.S. Airways Flight 1549  lost power probably due to a number of Canadian geese getting sucked into one or more of its engines. Within a split second the Captain of the plane tried to head for New Jersey but it was obvious to him that the aircraft could not make it.

The plane was losing power and altitude, The lives of 5 crew members and approximately 150 passengers hung in the balance as the plane hung over the densely populated New York city metropolitan area.

Almost immediately Captain Chesley Sullenberger decided to use the Hudson River as his landing strip.

The quick decision proved to be the best possible one.

Without risking the lives of any citizens below his craft, Captain Sullenberger tried to save the lives of the more than 150 people in his care and in what officials and experienced aviators can only describe as the type of picture perfect landing that one hopes for under the best of condition, Sullenberger glided the powerless aircraft down towards the Hudson’s icy waters and skimmed its surface until the plane came to a sudden stop, in one piece and floating.

The impact was still terrifically rough but it could have been much rougher had the angle of descent been slightly off.

Had the plane not hit the surface of the water properly, it could have easily been torn apart. Had it hit the river surface in any way less then perfect, its cargo hold doors and landing gear bays could have been comprised and allowed water to quickly rush into the plane and cause it to sink much quicker than it did, thereby subjecting passengers to subfreezing water and limiting their chances for rapid rescue.

Some might say that the Captain and the passengers were lucky, very lucky. As for me I believe that the passengers were lucky. Lucky to have Chesley Sullenberger as the Captain of their doomed flight.

What Captain Sullenberger did, did not involve luck. It took experience, commitment, judgment, confidence, talent, bravery, nerves of steel and presence of mind. A lesser person could have panicked. They could have frozen and allowed gravity to bring the plane down upon crowded neighborhoods as children made their way home from school.

Had Captain Sullenberger not been the man that he is, many more than the over 150 passengers on flight 1549 could have died. Hundreds more could have perished.

Of course the flight crew of flight 1549 were not alone in their heroism.

New York has dealt with calamity on a scale that few other cities have ever seen. As a result New york city is prepared for challenging, unexpected events and so the city’s emergency service workers ran into action before the plane hit the water. Alerted to the emergency when the plane first lost power, police, firemen, paramedics were in the ready and hospitals on both sides of the Hudson were put on alert. Ambulances rushed to the shores alongside of the planes resting place. Ferry boats darted toward the floating aircraft and as they floated along side the slowly sinking plane, passengers boarded the boats and were whisked to safety.

All of those involved are heroes but today our hats go off to captain Chesley Sullenberger.  Even before finally exiting the plane hinmself, whith the frigid water rising around him, Sullenberger went up and down the jet’s aisle to make sure that no one was still aboard.

Had it not been for him, the new year would not be getting out of its first 15 days without a tragic and dramatic loss of many lives.

New York’s Governor David Paterson called the event a “miracle on the Hudson”. I say the miracle is named Chesley Sullenberger and tonight there are many people thanking God for the miracle that Sullenberger performed.

THE ALARM BELLS ARE RINGING YET IMMIGRATION REFORM IS STILL ON THE BACK BURNER

Digg!Last year, In Iraq,  5,908 civilians and Iraqi soldiers and police were killed between January 1, 2008 and December 29, 2008.

Members of the police carry a coffin of one of their own. Seven police employees were killed in the same incident that took this fallen officers life

Members of the police carry a coffin of one of their own. Seven police employees were killed in the same incident that took this fallen officers life

In Mexico, 5,376 Mexican federal agents, police and civilians who were killed  by drug traders during the same time period.

So it can be safely said that nearly as many Mexicans died as a result of drug terrorists as did Iraqi’s from the terrorism in their war torn nation.

All of us are aware of the threats posed by terrorism. 9/11 brought that fact home and since the events of September 11, 2001, America has been on guard and on the offense in that War On Terror. Since that dreadful day and our somewhat official declaration of War on Terror, not a single attack has again taken place on American soil.

That is quite a contrast from the record that we accumulated in the decades since we declared the War On Drugs.

The term “war on drugs’ was first used by President Richard Nixon in 1971. At the time it was a play on the well known “War On Poverty” penned by the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson in the mid 60’s. The technical aspects of the War On Drugs have varied over time but it’s basic strategy has remained the same……. employ the cooperation of other nations to eliminate the illegal drug trade and eliminate the selling and use of illegal drugs through an aggressive zero tolerance, law enforcement agenda and a persistent and wide spread anti-drug education program and campaign.

To some degree, it has helped but the amount of time and money spent on the effort has produced results that are less than stellar. The rate of success in the War On Drugs certainly would not be considered acceptable in the War On Terror and yet as far apart as the results of the two are from each other, they are about to become one in the same.

Iraq is 6,005 miles away from the shores of the Unites States off of New York. That is a long distance yet we know that distance, although it may not make things easier, it still does not prevent terrorist attacks from taking place here. Mexico isn’t even inches away though. So terrorism through Mexico is even easier. They are connected to us, and not just physically. They are connected to us by direct and immediate contact through trade health, agriculture and citizens, legal and illegal. But perhaps the greatest connection between the United States and Mexico is drugs.

It is a deadly connection. One that dulls the minds of millions, endangers the lives of hundreds of thousands and kills tens of thousands each year.

A soldier stands guard in front of the Camino Real Hotel in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

A soldier stands guard in front of the Camino Real Hotel in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Drugs are probably the most prolific and profitable commodity exchanged across the U.S.-Mexican border, yet, despite the negative effects, it’s illegality and the “war” on them, drugs flow form South to North with the ease of the Shenandoah River in the Virginias.

The incredibly violent rate of drug deaths in Mexico during 2008 is a loud warning bell. It rings with more dire warning than the bellowing horns of the Titanic as it went down after the iceberg tore a lethal hole into it’s hull.

The incredible number of deaths occurred as a result of the increased boldness of drug cartels and gangs. They have taken a stand and made it clear that they are defiant and will not allow any government to infringe on their livelihoods.

In 2008, an increasing amount of drug lords have made incursions in the United States. One of the most recent well publicized events brought about an Amber Alert after the grandson of a man with shady loan debts to drug dealers kidnapped his grandson. The boy turned up in Las Vegas, but the drug dealer’s message was clear.

However, I must ask, what will it take for the drug issue to be truly taken seriously in the United States? Would  it have made a difference if that little California boy was found with his throat slashed? How many more incidents will it take before we realize that terrorism is about to get a partner. A partner that, like Palestinians in Gaza firing missiles into Israel, will be lobbing more violence into America.

America must wake up.

While there are those so far on the left and so far to the right that they meet together in the ideological circle and both try to legalize illegal drug use, an explosion of death and violence that we have not seen before is about to unleash itself.

I am well aware that drug violence is nothing new, but the extent to which it is escalating is new and yet we sit idly by as though things are not different. We almost accept it as commonplace.

Do you know how ingrained the dug culture has become in our southern neighbor?

Ever hear narcocorrido?

antnarcoscorridosNarcocorrido is a form of music based on a type of Mexican folk music called corrido. It sounds like a Latin polka and goes way back in time. It was used to celebrate revolutionary figures and heroes like Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa. The new version is called narcocorrido and it sings the praises of drug traffickers and drug related bandits. One older narcocorrido sings about Camelia the Texan, and her boyfriend who go to Los Angeles with a load of marijuana in their car’s tires. They sell it and Camelia’s boyfriend dumps her, saying, “Here’s your half, now I’m going up to San Francisco to my true love.” The song goes on to sing about how Camelia pulls out a gun and pumps him full of lead.

It concludes with the line……… “All the police found was the fired pistol; of the money and Camelia, nothing more was ever known.”

Sweet tune, isn’t it?

Not that the little ditty is astonishing. Here in America, with the likes of P. Diddy, 50 Cent, Snoop Dog, and others, the lyrics of that narcocorrido could be considered tame by American standards. Then again, standards are the problem. Just as narcocorrido is easing into mainstream Mexico, acceptance of drugs and drug violence has been easing into American culture.

That is not to say that we think violence or drug violence is good, but our tolerance of it has increased as our Photobucketintolerance of drugs has leveled off.

For example, I can recall a recall a comments board for a local newspaper in New Jersey called the Asbury Park Press. In it was a story about underage teens arrested for drinking and serving alcohol at a party that they held in their home while their parents were away. More than 60 percent of the comments were of the “let them be” impression. Some said “kids will be kids” and others said “the police should be doing more important things than enforcing underage drinking laws”.

I am not suggesting to bring back prohibition of alcohol but I am merely pointing out the permissiveness that is increasing in society. People are actually suggesting that kids should be let off the hook for breaking laws.

My point is,  just as it took 9/11 to finally deal with terrorism effectively, what will it take for us to deal with drugs and the drug trade effectively?

I for one feel that some of the intentions of the “War On Drugs” must be dealt with by using the same sense of conviction that 9/11 created, especially when it comes to the drug wars goal of employing the cooperation of other nations to eliminate the illegal drug trade.

But more than that, I believe it would be encouraging if we at least secured our border with Mexico. In fact I believe that is, first and foremost our nations top priority.

YES!, our most important priority. More so than even the economy.Secure Border Avavatar

Without a secure border there will be no economy to handle.

At a later date, I will detail a proposal of my own that I have previously released. It is called Open Arms-Secure Borders. It is a comprehensive immigration reform proposal that welcomes legal immigration but defends the sovereignty of our nation and respects and secures our borders.

For now though, Americans must at least acknowledge the fact that the iceberg is in sight and that the U.S.S. Freedom & Prosperity better start steering in another direction or like the Titanic, we will tear apart our hull of security.

During what can, at the very least, only be considered tough economic times, Congress is looked at for acting responsibly and demonstrating some fiscal responsibility.

Yet despite these facts, Congress goes ahead and accepts an automatic pay raise.

Doing so is reminiscent of the captain of the Titanic demanding that iceberg lettuce be served with dinner the night the great vessel went down.

WILL JON CORZINE REALLY BE UP FOR REELECTION?

antelephant-vs-donkey-boxingDigg!Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the title bout in this year’s politcal lineup.

In the left corner, wearing a host of tax and toll increases, a budget shortfall of more than $2.1 billion and scars of scandals with unions, ex-girlfriends and cabinet officials is Jon “Almost Gone” Corzine.

In the right corner, wearing a corruption busting image, over 130 successful prosecutions, and the hopes of millions who want to improve the quality of life in New Jersey………..Chris “You Can‘t Miss” Christie.

Many expect New Jersey’s headline political battle to shape up this way. The incumbent governor is, as usual, expected to seek reelection and go unchallenged for their party’s nomination. In this case that is Jon Corzine.

As for Republicans, Chris Christie is expected to run and win the Republican nomination for governor. Christie has finally made it clear that he will be declaring his candidacy and making it official in February. Many anticipate that he will ultimately win the Republican nomination for Governor and given the atmosphere and logistics, that may be likely. Maybe.

Chris Christie

Chris Christie

The establishment is behind him and the money is being horded for him.

Party leaders and elected officials have been lining up behind Christie like teenagers on line for Britney Spears’ latest CD. They are putting all their hopes on Chris Christie because he has some higher than usual name recognition when compared to other possible choices or at least more statewide recognition than most of them,  The thinking is that his name recognition will give us the best chance to defeat Corzine.

New Jersey is a unique state, in that without its own media market, getting statewide name identification is very difficult. That is why most candidates have to run in at least one statewide election before they can win a statewide election. Take McGreevey and Whitman for example.

To get name ID also takes a lot of money, more money than most campaigns in other states would. That is because a candidate has to invest in New York, the most expensive media market in the nation, and Philadelphia, the third most expensive media market in the nation. That makes it rough.

So I undertsand the value in wanting a nominee for Governor who has some good recognition in New Jersey but I wouldn’t pin all of my hopes and my party on that alone.

Add to that the fact that Christie’s opponent for the nomination could actually prove to be more satisfactory candidates for the nomination to rank and file primary voters and you have the potential for an upset in the G.O.P. race for the gubernatorial nomination.

On the other side of the aisle you have Jon Corzine.

Incumbents usually do not get challenged and Corzine is no different here. However, many Democrats are not so sure that they want him to run for reelection. Corzine himself is doubtful. Not because he doesn’t want the job, but because he is not sure that he can make a case good enough for reelecting him to continue doing the piss poor job that he has been doing.

That is why he  maneuvered himself for an appointment to President-Elect Obama’s cabinet as Secretary of antpolitical_boxingthe Treasury. The hope was that he could avoid an embarrassing reelection loss by saying “sorry, I have to leave to answer a higher call to duty”.

Well, given Corzine’s dismal financial record in New Jersey, no one wanted him to do for America what he did for Jersey.

So state Democrats are left with having to try to carry Corzine’s dead weight over the electoral finish line.

They are hoping that by linking Chris Christie to President George Bush, they could make Corzine more preferable. So despite the fact that Chris Christie has done his job successfully and put an end to the career of more corrupt politicians than anyone in recent state history, Democrats simply say he was appointed by George Bush. Well duh………and he did his job better than most Democrats have done their own jobs.

So with little to go on, Democrats are scared. They fear that Corzine is vulnerable and that they could lose to Republicans.  And they’re right to think that way.

That is where things get interesting.

POLITICS 24/7 understands that not only may Corzine not be up to reelection , he may not be up for his party’s nomination.

Senate President Richard Codey just might step up yet again.

Senate President and Former Acting Governor Dick Codey

Senate President and Former Acting Governor Dick Codey

Over the past several years years, Codey has been called upon to govern the state during several different times of crisis. Those occasions included when disgraced Governor Jim McGreevey resigned amid financial, patronage and sex scandals and most recently after Governor Corzine almost died in a tragic accident that he encountered while speeding down the Garden State Parkway without his seatbelt on.

Putting Codey‘s political leanings aside, he is viewed as a steady hand at the helm, a wise sage of New Jersey politics who can be trusted. Whether this is true or not does not matter. That is how he is viewed and politics is perception. He has never sought the job of Governor but governed when called upon to do so. That kind of reputation is a good one to have. People do not see him as power hungry or ego driven. They see him as a reliable, trustworthy figure.

That is why there are rumblings to have him be the Democrats nominee for Governor.

The move would be a smart one for liberals in New Jersey. It would be a smarter choice than opting to defend the abysmal record of Jon Corzine.

With Dick Codey as their nominee, they will not have to defend against the stream of legal challenges that are pending in the courts against Corzine. They will not have to defend against proposals to make the cost of driving on New Jersey’s roads so expensive that you need a part time job just to pay for the tolls that Corzine would be increasing for decades to come if he had his way.

Having Dick Codey as their standard bearer, Democrats will not have to explain why under his reign, the affordability crisis in New Jersey has gotten worse and why after raising taxes by as much as $2 billion dollars when his term began, we have a deficit of $2.1 billion dollars as his term ends.

Of course Codey would have to answer to why he rubberstamped many of the Corzine led initiatives but at least he will not have to try to explain why he initiated them.

The most controversial part of the Codey nomination is how he will get it.

Corzine or Codey?

Corzine or Codey?

Insiders are hoping that it can be arranged that late in the game, Jon Corzine will announce that for personal reason, he is not seeking a second term. That will allow Democrat party leaders to turn to Codey and say, with only a short amount of time left to nominate their party’s choice, they feel that they need Dick Codey to once again step in and save the day.

Is this likely?

Considering that Corzine has been looking for a way out of running for reelection and saving face, I believe that in a few months Corzine will receive a request to serve in the administration of President-Elect Obama. Not a cabinet position but a lesser position. One that Democrats can conjure up and provide Corzine with the excuse he needs in to save face.

So don’t expect this boxing match to be the one you expect. Not only does Chris Christie have yet to enter the ring as the G.O.P.’s official nominee for Governor, Democrats just might be putting the gloves on someone with more of a punch than Jon Corzine.Digg!

OFFER LEGISLATURE MERIT PAY LINKED TO THE ECONOMIES THAT THEY MANIPULATE

Digg!

ASSEMBLYMAN RICHARD MERKT
ASSEMBLYMAN RICHARD MERKT

Assemblyman Richard Merkt recently proposed to slash the salaries of New Jersey lawmakers by 10%.However, the Assemblyman is a candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination and the proposal could be viewed as an election gimmick. Then again, everything that any lawmaker does can be seen as a election gimmick.

In light of the recent pay raise of federal legislators, Merkt’s proposal is a noble one and worth looking at.

So his point is well taken. Times are tough and our representatives should be willing to make sacrifices and at least pretend to be empathetic to the people whose lives they affect.

Besides, lawmakers are partially responsible for any state’s economy including the one we are currently in here in Jersey so they should be more directly effected. I say they are partly responsibly because not everything is their fault. Nature, world events and human stupidity outside of Trenton politics, all play a part. But our lawmakers are elected to both steer us and our state economy in the right direction and to help our state better cope with the situations that we are dealt.

That being the case, it can easily be said that the current state legislature has not done a good job.

New Jersey has led the way in economic trouble over the past few years and under the direction of Governor Jon Corzine, the state legislature has been ill equipped at handling the situation. In fact, together the Democrat controlled state legislature and Democrat Governor have made matters worse.

Together they raised taxes, increased fees made it harder to do business in New Jersey and expanded opportunities for government corruption.

It could be said that Republicans bare no responsibility for this situation since they do not control any branch of state government. I can agree with that but it still doesn’t get Republicans off the hook.

Both parties have failed the people of New Jersey to one degree or another.

Democrats have failed to do anything right and Republicans have failed at convincing anyone that they could do better.

Given these circumstances, I have a more interesting proposal than Assemblyman Merkt’s.

How about we link state legislative and executive salaries to the economy and taxes of the state that they run.

Currently New Jersey State Assembly members and Senators make $49,000 a year.

I say let us reduce those salaries to a base of $41.000 a year and then use the following standard.

  1. For every percent or portion of a percentage that any given legislature raises income and property taxes, their salaries are decreased by 2%. For every percentage or degree of a percentage that they decrease income and property taxes their salaries can be raise by half of one percent.
  2. For every percent or portion of a percentage that they raise a sales or service tax, their salaries also decrease by that same percentage. Conversely, their salaries can be raised by half a percent for every full percent of a decrease in such taxes.
  3. For any new tax created, their salaries are reduced by 2% plus the equivalent percentage of that new tax.
  4. Every toll increase passed during any legislative session is matched by a reduction in legislative salaries that equal to the percentage of that increase.
  5. And finally, state legislative salaries are further reduced by the same number of percentage points that the state’s unemployment rate is whenever it exceeds 4%.

To make it fair. Newly elected legislators would not be held accountable for the taxes and economic situation that any previous legislative session, which they did not have a hand in, was responsible for, and so they would start with the base pay of 41K.

Of course, such measures would not prevent rich people like Governor Jon Corzine from raising fees and taxes, misappropriating funds and offering sweet heart deals to sweethearts like Carla Katz. After all, Corzine took a $400 million golden parachute from Wall Street and doesn’t even accept his salary for Governor but this system could help to make less well off lawmakers work a little harder to address our problems and to fight the wealthy Governor. Having their own pockets linked to what they pick out of ours could just help to make them finally work together for the benefit of themselves as well as us. Maybe such a pay scale system will help to really create a sense of bipartisanship?

Perhaps if the lawmakers of New Jersey had their financial well being directly linked to the state’s financial well being and our own financial opportunities, maybe tax increases and increased fees for everything from driving to landscaping and joining a gym will be viewed as a last resort. Like it should be.

Perhaps by immediately linking their decisions directly to their own incomes, they may better empathize with the financial impact that they bring to bare on those they are representing .

You could say that it is not fair to those who vote against penalizing taxes or policies that drive businesses away and raise the unemployment in the state. That might be so, but, those who simply voted against something are still culpable. They have more than a responsibility to vote against such measures. They have the responsibility of leadership and the responsibility of making their case and doing it so well that a preponderance of people in the state as well as the legislature are persuaded by their arguments. They must convince people why others are wrong and they are right. Failing to do so is a failure that they share in common with those who support regressive economic policies.

So Assemblyman Merkt’s proposed 10 % reduction in salary is nice.

It is certainly going in a direction far better than the 2.8% pay increase that Congress is willing to take, at of all times, now. But the gesture Merkt is making could be made more meaningful and be more enduring. By linking legislative salaries to their actions we are adding a new incentive to politics and a new level of innovation……..political merit pay. If you do a good job and keep a good economy going you get paid better.

Is this crazy?

Maybe it is. Maybe it is as far fetched as a State Senator taking money from a no show job given to him by a school funded with state money that the same State Senator helped procure with tax payer dollars that he helped get through the state legislature. Maybe this political merit pay scale sounds just as crazy as that same corrupt State Senator getting his state funded pension after ripping the state off and being convicted.

But just like former *Senator Wayne Bryant, it may sound crazy but it could be true if like Wayne Bryant, we just did it.

Digg!__________________________________________

punchline-politics21

I was talking to a friend of mine’s little girl the other day.

I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied,

I want to be President!”

Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there. So then I asked her, “If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?”

She replied, “I’d give houses to all the homeless people.”

“Wow – what a worthy goal.” I told her, “You don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I’ll pay you $50. Then I’ll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house.”

Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked,

“Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?”

And I said, “Welcome to the Republican Party.”

Her folks still aren’t talking to me.
