Politcal Bloodbath Shapes Up In Illinois – Kirk & Giannoulias Win Their Primaries

Bookmark and Share   And they’re off!
`
The race for President Obama’s old Senate seat in Illinois has its official slate of candidates after last night‘s primary election. You remember the seat we‘re talking about. It’s the one that went up for auction by Illinois Democrat Governor Rod Blagojevich when Barry got elected President.

After the scandal plagued process to fill the vacancy created by then Senator Obama’s victory, under a shroud of doubt, Roland Burris was appointed by Blago and he has been keeping the seat warm ever since. Well now the race to replace Burris is set. On the Democrat side Alexi Giannoulias took the nomination for himself after defeating four others and beating his closest rival by 6%.

On the Republican side, Congressman Mark Kirk fought off five contenders and won the GOP nomination in a landslide that had him swamp his closest opponent by a whopping 37%.

Democrat Primary Results

  1.   Giannoulias   345,265    39%
  2.     Hoffman             298,845    33%
  3.     Jackson              174,433    19%
  4.     Marshall              50,725      5%
  5.     Meister                16,000       1%

Republican Primary Results

  1. Kirk              416,853         56%
  2. Hughes           141,751          19%
  3. Lowery            65,771            8%
  4. Thomas            53,673            7%
  5. Martin               37,201            5%
  6. Arrington        20,888             2%

Sounds to me like Republicans are more sure of their nominee than Democrats are with their candidate. And with good reason.

Giannoulias is the State Treasurer of Illinois. It is a job he got after he defeated State Senator Christine Rodagno in 2006 for the open seat. Part of his successful aura was based on his supposed knowledge of finances. Giannoulias’ daddy owns banks and he had his son help manage a few of them.

The ironic part of all this is, since Democrats have tried to shift attention away from their failed government takeover of healthcare, they have made banks the enemy. The President has made speech after speech about how banks are bad and how we must punish them. So now the father-made boy banker ends up being the Democrat’s nominee for Senate. I guess only those banks that don’t fund Democrats and their cronies are bad.

Which brings us to this commercial.

Without skipping a beat, the NRSC, jumped on the odd selection of Giannoulias as their standard bearer, especially given his ties to and support for some of Chicago’s shadiest characters.

The ad gives scandal plagued Illinois voters a reason to think twice about pulling the lever for another politician who is knee deep in questionable ethics and ties to corruption.

As for Republicans, Mark Kirk is really not someone who inspires conservatives. After being one of only 8 Republicans to vote for the liberal Cap-and-Trade, environmental tax scheme, Kirk passes no litmus tests. But hey, aren’t litmus tests suppose to be politically incorrect? So I guess you can say that Kirk is the politically correct candidate.

As for Giannoulias, in his victory speech he told Mark Kirk “come November, your days as a Washington insider are over”. That’s pretty funny coming from a man who has made his money from his daddy’s business and pals around with Washington insider’s like President Obama while financing Chicago political insiders like convicted slumlord Tony Rezko. Leave it to a liberal to show their hypocritical stripes.

Giannoulias is as much an insider as long serving Washington insider, Vice President Joe Biden.

Back in 2006, Crain’s Chicago Business’ reported:

Just why did Sen. Obama last week endorse for Illinois treasurer an unknown 29-year-old whose financial experience is limited to working at a family-owned Chicago bank, and who, as recently as five years ago, was shooting professional hoops as point guard with team Panionios of Athens, Greece?” (Greg Hinz, Op-Ed, “Halo Tarnish,” Crain’s Chicago Business, 12/12/05)

Beyond that, the record shows the following insider history;

  • The Giannoulias family introduced Barack Obama to powerful contributors and raised About $100,000 for his senate race. (Greg Hinz, Op-Ed, “Halo Tarnish,” Crain’s Chicago Business, 12/12/05)
  • President Obama kept his senate campaign funds at Broadway Bank, one of the banks owned by Gianoulas (John T. Slania, “On Broadway: City’s Most Profitable Bank,” Crain’s Chicago Business, 10/25/04)
  • Giannoulias hosted a fundraiser for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign back in 2007. (Lynn Sweet, “State Giannoulias Hosts Obama Funder In Chicago,” Chicago Sun-Times’ “Lynn Sweet” Blog, blogs.suntimes.com, 9/5/07)
  • Since 2003, as a bundler for Obama’s presidential campaign, Giannoulias contributed at least $7,000 to the President’s Senate campaign. (CQ Money Line Website, moneyline.cq.com, Accessed 6/21/08)

President Obama himself stated;

“I’ve got a very personal relationship with Alexi … He was critical for me in terms of reaching out to the Greek community, other ethnic communities in the city. He was there from the start, when people didn’t give me a shot.” (Rick Pearson, “Parties Get Set For Busy Primary,” Chicago Tribune, 12/5/05)

In addition to that, his banks have aided and abetted the criminal activity of many supporters of liberal insiders. The Chicago slumlords of Obama backer Tony Rezko were, in part financed, by Giannoulias banks.

And to top it all off, like any good Chicago political insider, scandal just latches on to Giannoulias.

  • In 2006, he was sharply criticized for loaning money to crime bosses. (Rick Pearson and David Jackson, “Obama Leans On Treasurer Nominee,” Chicago Tribune, 4/13/06)
  • He accepted a $5,000 campaign contribution from a casino owner in Florida, after his uncle was killed in an execution-style shooting and was foundd to have connections to Jack Abramoff. (Erin Calandriello, “Campaign Donation Has Links To Scandal,” Chicago Daily Herald, 2/10/06)

So Democrats have a real gem on their hands. As a person, Giannoulias has ridden his father’s coattails into fame and fortune. As a politician he has become an underhanded insider who trades in political favors with some of the most disreputable and corrupt people you can find. And when he deals with the issues, he is exactly as his campaign described him…..a devout progressive………. a label which President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Democrats et al, have turned into an anchor that, in this anti-liberal election cycle, will be worn around Alexi Giannoulias’ neck.

In fact, the record shows that Alexi Giannoulias fits right in with establishment liberals. He supports the healthcare tax scheme that would have government takeover healthcare in America. He supports the culture of dependency and opposes a proper execution of the War On Terror.

As a state treasurer, Giannoulias initiated several new spending programs and in 2008 Giannoulis invested state money in a Core Plus college savings program that experienced great losses. At the same time, despite the need for federal and state belt tightening, Giannoulias decided to have the state treasurers office purchase a hybrid vehicle that is suppose to allow state workers travel the state to sign up families for a college savings program called Bright Start. So much for fiscal responsibility.

So let the races begin! And let Democrats, and self described progressive everywhere, discover that all the king’s horses and all the kings men will not be able to put their liberal monopoly back together again.

Its title  is probably less of a title than it is an accurate  description of an increasing sentiment that is seeping into the minds of more and more Americans as each and every day of President Obama’s administration passes.

As the current ruling liberal Democrat regime of President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid implement more and more of  their liberal concepts, all together they are forcing Americans to see policies  reminiscent of failed socialist states.  They are increasingly realizing that with the appointment of  an endless number of Czars, the troika of Obama, Pelosi and Reid  are growing a larger, more centralized, more invasive and more controlling government that will cost the taxpayer more and more money and ultimately deliver less and less freedom.

Many of those Americans who have come to this conclusion were already unhappy with the former administration and felt a disconnect between their lower taxation policy and continued sustained levels of spending.  They also were not pleased with what amounted to the start of a what has now become an uncontrollable trend……..bailout mania.

But now as one administration passed and a new one took control any unhappiness with the previous President and Congress has only been tripled when it comes to the actions of the new ones.  So much so that unhappiness has turned into anger and anger has turned into a movement.

Hence the The Conservative Constitutionalist Movement.

The creator of this new blog happens to be a man whom I am honored to have as an acquaintance.  I call him Friday.

No. I do not call him on Fridays.   He goes by the name Friday on the political debate website that we are both active participanst of, U4Prez.com

If you haven’t joined the site yet do so because you are missing out on one of the freeset, fiestiest  formats for open political debate on the internet and it has an intriguing added attraction that actually allows you to run your own race for President among the other candidates on U4Prez.

Friday has always been conservative and with an accomplished backgound in economics he is not just some “country bumpkin clinging to his guns and religion”.  He is a man of faith though and he is also a man of conviction, principle, strong character and a deep and abiding faith in the principles that founded this great nation of ours.

So what it comes down to is that Friday is someone whose understanding and love of freedom has forced him to be offended by the blatant assault on freedom that he sees our own federal government carrying out.  So offended that he is a leader in the Conservative Constitutionalist Movement

He believes in the conservative values which, whenever applied corerectly, have proven to be times of our nations greatest success.  And he also believes in the Constitution of the United States.  Believing in it is an inherrent part of conservatism but these day as we see both Republicans and Democrats stretching the Constitution to a breaking point , people like Friday can’t help but try to pull us back and restore us to the constituitonal form of governance that we were meant to have.

So I invite you all to subscribe to his new blog.  If you have any concerns about your country or find yourself confused as to why exactly so many people in this country are angry at what is coming out of Washington, read the Conservative Constitutionalist blog.  In plain black and white, Friday will explain why if you aren’t angry yet, you should be.

THE ALARM BELLS ARE RINGING YET IMMIGRATION REFORM IS STILL ON THE BACK BURNER

Digg!Last year, In Iraq,  5,908 civilians and Iraqi soldiers and police were killed between January 1, 2008 and December 29, 2008.

Members of the police carry a coffin of one of their own. Seven police employees were killed in the same incident that took this fallen officers life

Members of the police carry a coffin of one of their own. Seven police employees were killed in the same incident that took this fallen officers life

In Mexico, 5,376 Mexican federal agents, police and civilians who were killed  by drug traders during the same time period.

So it can be safely said that nearly as many Mexicans died as a result of drug terrorists as did Iraqi’s from the terrorism in their war torn nation.

All of us are aware of the threats posed by terrorism. 9/11 brought that fact home and since the events of September 11, 2001, America has been on guard and on the offense in that War On Terror. Since that dreadful day and our somewhat official declaration of War on Terror, not a single attack has again taken place on American soil.

That is quite a contrast from the record that we accumulated in the decades since we declared the War On Drugs.

The term “war on drugs’ was first used by President Richard Nixon in 1971. At the time it was a play on the well known “War On Poverty” penned by the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson in the mid 60’s. The technical aspects of the War On Drugs have varied over time but it’s basic strategy has remained the same……. employ the cooperation of other nations to eliminate the illegal drug trade and eliminate the selling and use of illegal drugs through an aggressive zero tolerance, law enforcement agenda and a persistent and wide spread anti-drug education program and campaign.

To some degree, it has helped but the amount of time and money spent on the effort has produced results that are less than stellar. The rate of success in the War On Drugs certainly would not be considered acceptable in the War On Terror and yet as far apart as the results of the two are from each other, they are about to become one in the same.

Iraq is 6,005 miles away from the shores of the Unites States off of New York. That is a long distance yet we know that distance, although it may not make things easier, it still does not prevent terrorist attacks from taking place here. Mexico isn’t even inches away though. So terrorism through Mexico is even easier. They are connected to us, and not just physically. They are connected to us by direct and immediate contact through trade health, agriculture and citizens, legal and illegal. But perhaps the greatest connection between the United States and Mexico is drugs.

It is a deadly connection. One that dulls the minds of millions, endangers the lives of hundreds of thousands and kills tens of thousands each year.

A soldier stands guard in front of the Camino Real Hotel in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

A soldier stands guard in front of the Camino Real Hotel in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Drugs are probably the most prolific and profitable commodity exchanged across the U.S.-Mexican border, yet, despite the negative effects, it’s illegality and the “war” on them, drugs flow form South to North with the ease of the Shenandoah River in the Virginias.

The incredibly violent rate of drug deaths in Mexico during 2008 is a loud warning bell. It rings with more dire warning than the bellowing horns of the Titanic as it went down after the iceberg tore a lethal hole into it’s hull.

The incredible number of deaths occurred as a result of the increased boldness of drug cartels and gangs. They have taken a stand and made it clear that they are defiant and will not allow any government to infringe on their livelihoods.

In 2008, an increasing amount of drug lords have made incursions in the United States. One of the most recent well publicized events brought about an Amber Alert after the grandson of a man with shady loan debts to drug dealers kidnapped his grandson. The boy turned up in Las Vegas, but the drug dealer’s message was clear.

However, I must ask, what will it take for the drug issue to be truly taken seriously in the United States? Would  it have made a difference if that little California boy was found with his throat slashed? How many more incidents will it take before we realize that terrorism is about to get a partner. A partner that, like Palestinians in Gaza firing missiles into Israel, will be lobbing more violence into America.

America must wake up.

While there are those so far on the left and so far to the right that they meet together in the ideological circle and both try to legalize illegal drug use, an explosion of death and violence that we have not seen before is about to unleash itself.

I am well aware that drug violence is nothing new, but the extent to which it is escalating is new and yet we sit idly by as though things are not different. We almost accept it as commonplace.

Do you know how ingrained the dug culture has become in our southern neighbor?

Ever hear narcocorrido?

antnarcoscorridosNarcocorrido is a form of music based on a type of Mexican folk music called corrido. It sounds like a Latin polka and goes way back in time. It was used to celebrate revolutionary figures and heroes like Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa. The new version is called narcocorrido and it sings the praises of drug traffickers and drug related bandits. One older narcocorrido sings about Camelia the Texan, and her boyfriend who go to Los Angeles with a load of marijuana in their car’s tires. They sell it and Camelia’s boyfriend dumps her, saying, “Here’s your half, now I’m going up to San Francisco to my true love.” The song goes on to sing about how Camelia pulls out a gun and pumps him full of lead.

It concludes with the line……… “All the police found was the fired pistol; of the money and Camelia, nothing more was ever known.”

Sweet tune, isn’t it?

Not that the little ditty is astonishing. Here in America, with the likes of P. Diddy, 50 Cent, Snoop Dog, and others, the lyrics of that narcocorrido could be considered tame by American standards. Then again, standards are the problem. Just as narcocorrido is easing into mainstream Mexico, acceptance of drugs and drug violence has been easing into American culture.

That is not to say that we think violence or drug violence is good, but our tolerance of it has increased as our Photobucketintolerance of drugs has leveled off.

For example, I can recall a recall a comments board for a local newspaper in New Jersey called the Asbury Park Press. In it was a story about underage teens arrested for drinking and serving alcohol at a party that they held in their home while their parents were away. More than 60 percent of the comments were of the “let them be” impression. Some said “kids will be kids” and others said “the police should be doing more important things than enforcing underage drinking laws”.

I am not suggesting to bring back prohibition of alcohol but I am merely pointing out the permissiveness that is increasing in society. People are actually suggesting that kids should be let off the hook for breaking laws.

My point is,  just as it took 9/11 to finally deal with terrorism effectively, what will it take for us to deal with drugs and the drug trade effectively?

I for one feel that some of the intentions of the “War On Drugs” must be dealt with by using the same sense of conviction that 9/11 created, especially when it comes to the drug wars goal of employing the cooperation of other nations to eliminate the illegal drug trade.

But more than that, I believe it would be encouraging if we at least secured our border with Mexico. In fact I believe that is, first and foremost our nations top priority.

YES!, our most important priority. More so than even the economy.Secure Border Avavatar

Without a secure border there will be no economy to handle.

At a later date, I will detail a proposal of my own that I have previously released. It is called Open Arms-Secure Borders. It is a comprehensive immigration reform proposal that welcomes legal immigration but defends the sovereignty of our nation and respects and secures our borders.

For now though, Americans must at least acknowledge the fact that the iceberg is in sight and that the U.S.S. Freedom & Prosperity better start steering in another direction or like the Titanic, we will tear apart our hull of security.

During what can, at the very least, only be considered tough economic times, Congress is looked at for acting responsibly and demonstrating some fiscal responsibility.

Yet despite these facts, Congress goes ahead and accepts an automatic pay raise.

Doing so is reminiscent of the captain of the Titanic demanding that iceberg lettuce be served with dinner the night the great vessel went down.
