New Jersey Residents Can Provide and Receive Valuable Hurricane Information on Facebook

Bookmark and Share   With no changes in the forecasted track of Hurricane Irene, New Jersey residents are urged here and also here.  In addition to those links there is now a Facebook page that provides valuable, up to date infortmation for New Jersey residents.  It is called the Jersey Shore Hurricane Page .

On it you will find information from other Jersey residents regarding such things as where there are gas shortages, ongoing storm preparations in local communities, storm tracking data and other such data.  You are also urged to provide any updates or information that you feel are pertinent.

This page is an excellent use of Facebook.  In a society where Facebook communications have become pervaisve, this is an example of just how much good Facebook can be used for.

Governor Christie Declares a State of Emergency in Advance of Hurricane Irene

Bookmark and Share   As of 1:00 pm, Governor Chris Christie wrapped up a half hour longe press in which he declared a state of emergency in advance of Hurricane Irene.

In his presser the Governor stated that he understood how the people of New Jersey are “cynical and tough”.  He added “So amI.  I suspect that maybe that is why they elected me”.  But Christie warned that no one should be cynical about the warnings he was issuing nor should they think they are tougher than the potential of Irene.

Christie said that at the moment he issuing a voluntary evacuation warning to people in low lying areas of the state and in shore communities, especially those who are on  the state’s barrier islands.  He told residents that while the evacuatuin is now voluntary, the potential exists for him to make it a mandatory evacuation and asks residents to leave now, before such a mandatory order sends a hign volume of New Jerseyansd on to roads all at the same time and thereby creating traffic jams and delaying the evacuation process.

Christie also warned that this storm will impact the entire state, not just the coast and that with recent heavy rainfalls, all of the states rivers and streams are at risk of reaching catastrophic flooding levels due to an additional 6 to 12 inches of rainfall just from Irene alone.

Politics 24/7 urges all New Jersey residents to monitor the storm as closely as possible.  We also suggest that they take the following tips for their safety.

Learn what disasters or emergencies may occur in your area. These events can range from those affecting only you and your family, like a home fire or medical emergency, to those affecting your entire community, like an earthquake or flood.

  • Identify how local authorities will notify you during a disaster and how you will get information, whether through local radio, TV or NOAA Weather Radio stations or channels.
  • Know the difference between different weather alerts such as watches and warnings and what actions to take in each.
  • Know what actions to take to protect yourself during disasters that may occur in areas where you travel or have moved recently. For example, if you travel to a place where earthquakes are common and you are not familiar with them, make sure you know what to do to protect yourself should one occur.
  • When a major disaster occurs, your community can change in an instant. Loved ones may be hurt and emergency response is likely to be delayed. Make sure that at least one member of your household is trained in first aid and CPR and knows how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). This training is useful in many emergency situations.
  • Share what you have learned with your family, household and neighbors and encourage them to be informed.

Emergency Contact Cards for All Household Members
Get your cards online at http://www.redcross.org/prepare/ECCard.pdf.

  • Print one card for each family member.
  • Write the contact information for each household member, such as work, school and cell phone numbers.
  • Fold the card so it fits in your pocket, wallet or purse.
  • Carry the card with you so it is available in the event of a disaster or other emergency.

Residents are also advised to begin preparing emergency or disaster kits that consist of the following:

 1Water – at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

1Food – at least enough for 3 to 7 days
— non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
— foods for infants or the elderly
— snack foods
— non-electric can opener
— cooking tools / fuel
— paper plates / plastic utensils 1Blankets / Pillows, etc.

1Clothing – seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes

1First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs1Special Items – for babies and the elderly1Toiletries / Hygiene items / Moisture wipes1Flashlight / Batteries

1Radio – Battery operated and NOAA weather radio1Telephones – Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set

1Cash (with some small bills) and Credit Cards – Banks and ATMs may not be available for extended periods

1Keys

1Important documents – in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
— insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.

1Tools – keep a set with you during the storm1Vehicle fuel tanks filled

1Toys, Books and Games

1Pet care items
— proper identification / immunization records / medications
— ample supply of food and water
— a carrier or cage
— muzzle and leash

New Jersey Hurricane Irene and Preparedness Update

Bookmark and Share   While the exact projected track of a hurricane can never be predicted, the general track can and at this point in time, expert consensus projects Hurricane Irene to be on a track that takes it right up the East Coast.  In the forecast model below, the eye of the hurricane directly passes over Monmouth and Ocean counties around 9:00 pm Sunday evening.  It also projects that maximum sustained winds around the eye may be as high as 93 or 94 mph.

Cick here to play a frame by frame animation of the storms projected track

Before and after the eye storm passes over, Hurricane Irene will be wreaking havoc.

While tropical systems of this sort often pick up speed and move through our area relatively quickly, right now Hurricane Irene is expected to be a slow mover.  This means that devastating winds and bands and pockets of torrential rains will be hammering the area for hours before and after the eye passes over  or near New Jersey ort portions of the state such as Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Compunding the problem will be the heavy rains that the area has already experienced in the days before Irene.  Those hevy rains have already soaked the area and will only make it harder for the ground to better absorb the heavy rains of Irene.

But the most damaging affects of Hurricane Irene will be its tidal surge.  Bays such as Raritan will be seeing a steady flow of wind driven waves fill their basins with abnormally heavy volumes of water.  As a result, extremely high tides will bring water further inland and create dangerous flood conditions.   Adding to the problem will be extra high tides that will be in place becuase of this weekends full moon.

The state Office of Emergency Management says if Hurricane Irene maintains both its projected track and strength,  evacuations of communities along the Jersey shore due to tidal and storm surge flooding, will be be likely.

Shore residents should make sure emergency supply kits for their home and cars are fully stocked.  New Jersey residents should also  have a plan in place in case of an evacuation order and should stay informed about the threat from the storm.

When local, county or State officials order you to evacuate , they will provide specific information about the roads you should take. Police and first responders will be posted in your community to direct traffic and block roads that are unsafe.

In the meantime, you can a view a county-by-county  run down on the evacuation routes nearest you.  It is important to remember this though.  Do not wait to evacuate at the last minute.  New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation.  That means that with such a heavy concentration of people in such a relatively small space we are prone to traffic jams and you do not want to be fleeing for safety in a ten mile back up on the Garden State Parkway or any of the established evacuation routes.

Hurricane Irene is not something to be taken likely and while some may be feeling that all this discussion about it, is simply increasing anxiety.  None of this is meant to inspire fear or to exaggerate the effects of the storm.  It is simply meant as a means for you to prepare for the worst, if it should become possible.  Currently the worst effects of this storm are very possible and those in its possible path need to be aware of the dangers and do their best to stay informed about its developments and be prepared to take the measures that will help you avoid the worst.

Congressman Scott Garrett Asks New Jersey Residents to Prepare for Hurrican Irene

Irene was a Category 1 storm   Bookmark and Share    With the potential for Hurricane Irene to affect the  Tri-State area in one form or another, POLITICS 24/7 asks all New Jersey residents, especially those who live along  the state’s coast, to heed the advice of Congressman Garrett whose message to his constituents is shown below this post.

  The latest models have Hurricane Irene beginning to effect our region late Saturday, but on Sunday, they expect us to be experiencing the worst of it, which weather experts are describing as “some of the worst weather many in our area have ever seen.”  Of course it is possible for the storm to change course and lose some of its strength, but that is not how it looks now.  No matter what , some effects will be felt and it is best to hope for the best but expect and prepare for the worst.  This precaution should be especially heeded by those living along the Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut Coasts.  Those who live along these areas will be  particularly vulnerable to what is responsible for most hurricane related deaths………the tidal surge that is swept inland by the hurricane’s winds.

The larger the winds, the higher the surge and Irene can be anywhere from a Category 1 to Category 3 hurricane as it approaches us.  This means you must at the very least take the precautions that Congressman Garrett suggests in the letter you will find below the following tracking map.

This map is the most recent projected path of Irene as of  11:00 pm, Wednesday.  The cone of possibility that is shown in the track of the storm demonstrates that there exists a chance for Irene to wobble further East or West of the center path.  The further East it moves, the less effects we will see.   The further West it wobbles means that we are in for the worst that the storm has to offer.  Right now, indications are that we could experience winds anywhere between 70 to 90 mph or more.

Congressman Scott Garrett, Proudly Serving the 5th District of New Jersey

Preparing for Hurricane Irene

With Hurricane Irene tracking towards New Jersey this weekend, I wanted to make sure residents of the 5th District were prepared for the storm.

 If you haven’t already, I encourage you to visit the American Red Cross’s website to review the precautionary steps you should be taking ahead of the storm. While we may not face the brunt of the storm, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prepare for the worst.

After all, preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane as powerful as Irene, which may bring flooding, tornadoes and high winds to North Jersey.

I encourage all 5th District residents to take three quick steps to prepare for Irene:

  1.  Build a kit;
  2.  Make a plan
  3.  Be informed

In addition, please review the Red Cross’s Hurricane Safety Checklist.

If you need anything at all, please don’t hesitate to contact one of my district offices for assistance.

Sincerely,

Scott Garrett

East Coast Earthquake Prompts President to Propose a New Stimulus Package

In response to today’s East Coast earthquake that was felt from  as far South as Georgia and as far North as Canada, President Obama has proposed a new economic stimulus package.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced that the President has cancelled his Thursday morning golf game in Martha’s Vineyard to present to the people a new stimulus package that will create jobs and prevent future quakes from occurring along the Eastern seaboard.

The $938 billion package will finance a major excavation project designed to replace the old and worn tectonic plates which were responsible for causing Tuesday’s shifting of the earth.  According to Carney;

“The President has been consistently fighting for much needed and long overdue infrastructure maintenance and construction.  In the wake of the widely felt East Coast earthquake, it is clear to everyone that the President is correct.  Our U.S. tectonic plates have not undergone any major repairs at anytime in history.  It is long overdue”

Carney made it clear that the President will take his case to the people and  demonstrate that not only will this new spending create hundreds of thousands of much-needed new jobs, but is also an investment that saves lives.  The White House believes that if any President can stabilize the earth it is President Obama.

The President’s proposal calls for Vice President Joe Biden to head up the new project whic is being called Operaton Solid Ground.  The White House is also reaching out to former Congressman Anthony Weiner and requesting that he head up a special project division which will be responsible for monitoring the project and providing progress reports to Congress with the help of photographic evidence.

Another member of the Operation Solid Ground oversight committee will be former Vice President Al Gore.  Gore will be in charge of the projects Geothermal Restructuring division.  This division will attempt to combat global warming by lining the tectonic plates with a complex maze of cooling systems that will regulate the earth’s core temperature.

Jay Carney pointed out that the President was of the opinion that while we’re down there, we mine as well take advantage of the opportunity to combat global warming too .

When made aware of the new Obama initiative, Speaker of the House John Boehner became unavailable for comment as his jaw dropped and he became speechless.

In her own response, Democratic National Committee Chair, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz announced that she is proud of the President’s bold leadership which kills two birds with one stone by not only pumping more money into our economy and creating  jobs, but by also finally fixing the earth. According to Wasserman-Schultz;

“Not since Moses split the Red Sea has a leader undertaken such a massive and lofty initiative.  Thanks to him, our nation and the world will be a much better place for the effort”

In a related story, upon hearing the news of the new stimulus initiative, the credit rating agencies Moody’s and Fitch joined with Standards & Poors’ in their recent decision to downgrade the U.S. credit rating.  All three of the major credit rating services downgraded the U.S. to an NH-.  This is a newly created rating that stands for “No Hope”.  Treasury Secretary Gietner responded to the move optimistically  and said that he believes we will be upgraded to an NH+ in no time at all.

Marco Rubio Discusses the Proper Role of Government, Live from the Reagan Library

Contact Us Visit Our Website Donate Now The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation

Senator Marco Rubio is probably one of the most promising future national leaders.  He is certainly a rising star in the Republican Party and conservative movement.  Adored by the TEA movement, trusted by fellow Floridians, and admired by Republicans throughout    the nation, freshman United States Senator Rubio has even been talked about as potential presidential nominee in 2012.  But having put that idea to rest, Rubio is settling in a for the long haul and preparing to do the heavylifting that will be required to get our national debt under control, curb spending, reform entitlements, reduce the tax burden and the size and scope of government, and to  make sure that our nation is always constantly defending our people and our liberty.

 Try to take advantage of this opportunity by particpating in the Reagan Library’s live webcast of this event which you can see here.

Join the “I Hate the Talentless and Socialist Janeane Garofalo” Facebook Page

Bookmark and Share  So apparently Herman Cain is an Uncle Tom who has been hired by the Republican Party in order to deflect charges of being a racist entity. So says Hollywood liberal elitist Janeane Garofalo, a truly talentless hack who pretends to be a politically aware citizen when in fact she is an ignorant socialist.

In her own words, Garofalo told another untalented socialist hack, Keith Olbermann, the following:

“It’s from the first time I ever saw him, especially after the first Fox debate and Frank Luntz as you know, has zero credibility — has these alleged ‘just plain folks’ polls after these Fox debates — and he asked who won the debate. And he was just about to say raise your hand if you support and before he finished, everybody’s hand went up to support Herman Cain. So it seemed as if they had been coached to support Herman Cain.

“I believe Herman Cain is in this presidential race because he deflects the racism that is inherent in the Republican Party, the conservative movement, the tea party certainly, and the last 30 years, the Republican Party has been moving more and more the right, also race-baiting more, gay-baiting more, religion-baiting more.”

She adds;

“But Herman Cain, I feel like, is being paid by somebody to be involved and to run for president so that you go, ‘Oh, they can’t be racist. It’s a black guy. It’s a black guy asking for Obama to be impeached’ or ‘It’s a black guy who is anti-Muslim,’ or ‘It’s a black guy who is a tea party guy,’”

Garofalo continued;

“I feel like, well wouldn’t that suit the purposes of whomever astroturfs these things, whether it be the Koch Brothers or ALEC or Grover Norquist or anything. It could even be Karl Rove. ‘Let’s get Herman Cain involved so it deflects the obvious racism of our Republican Party.’

Under normal circumstances, Garofalo’s comments might be viewed as just another outrageous liberal charge from an out of touch Hollywood type. But this is not a normal circumstance, this is an act of despicable defamation, not just to the G.O.P. but to Herman Cain, a respectable American leader of business and community. But this ridiculous charge by Garofalo does not stand alone. It must be viewed in the context of the rest of her lies and outrageous claims.

Garafalo has publicly called the tea Party a “bunch of tea bagging redneck racists”. She has accused the Bush/Cheney Administration of participating in “a conspiracy of the 43rd Reich.”, and demonstrated her true ignorance and intolerance of different opinions in statements such as;

“When Communist U.S.S.R. was a superpower, the world was better off. The right-wing media is trying to marginalize the peace movement.”

“When I see the American flag, I go, ‘Oh my God, you’re insulting me.”

And let us not forget;

“Let’s be very honest about what this is about. It’s not about bashing Democrats, it’s not about taxes, they have no idea what the Boston tea party was about, they don’t know their history at all. This is about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up.”

Meanwhile, the backlash to these remarks has done nothing but assist the cause of Herman Cain.  On Thursday evening his staff posted the following Twitter

“Thanks, Ms. Garofolo. It’s been a great day of fundraising for @THEHermanCain http://t.co/zZnNGwm #tcot”

Although Garofalo has a right to her opinion, those of us who are subjected to listening to her rants in the  media, also have a right to react with our own opinions of Ms. Garofalo. So here goes.

Garofalo is a freakish mix of losers like Joy Behar, Rosie O’Donnell, and Michael Moore. She is a delusional leftist who would not know the truth if it was written for her in a script.

Garafalo’s claim to fame is that she is a has been dark standup comedian, failed radio host, and bit part actress in made for cable programs that consider her for parts because of her willingness to curse like a truck driver. Since you can only get so many laughs from the use of the f word or calling people bitches, she has embarked on a liberal propaganda tour that is based on political opinions stemming from the teachings of Karl Marx.

As a typical uninformed liberal who would rather rewrite history than study it, Garofalo is clearly out of touch with reality. Perhaps she is suffering from some form of mental illness but either way, she is delusional and obnoxious and if the media wants to continue giving her irresponsible words air time, the proliferation of works dedicated to the disapproval and dislike of Garofalo and the Marxist cause she advances, are inevitable.

In the mean time, while there exists no doubt that Ms. Garofalo made her accusations, but no evidence or truth to the claim that Herman Cain is a hired G.O.P. operative betraying his race, Ms. Garofalo should show a modicum of decency and apologize to the National Republican Committee, the tens of million of Americans who are registered Republicans, and Herman Cain, a man who sacrificed much to make his case to the American people, unlike Jeneane Garofalo who is afforded the chance to denigrate decent people simply because she is a typical New York-Hollywood liberal elitist.

With that said, I ask that you join the newly created “I Hate the Talentless and Socialist Janeane Garofalo” Facebook Page.

Go to the page, click the “Like” button and post your own opinions of Garofalo and her outrageous accusations and claims.

The Political Maturation of Chris Christie

Bookmark and Share  Recently socialist political news analyst Jonathon Alter declared that Chris Christie was preparing for a run for President.  This revelation was based on sources which told him that Christie began using focus groups to prepare for the run.  As it turned out the reliably unreliable Jonathon was, as usual, wrong.  Alter is a personality from MSNBC, or which I commonly refer to it as, the Mostly Slanted News Bias Corporation.  So it is not surprising that he would get yet another political scoop wrong.  However, at the same time, it is easy to assume that Christie might run.

Even after months of denying a run for President and going so far as to say that the only thing he could do to really convince people he was not running was to commit suicide, the prospect of his presidential candidacy is still not out of the question.  Christie’s name still sits at the top of the list of names of those who people would like to run and he has continuously been courted by business groups and political leaders from across the nation.  The most recent pitch was made by a mix of business leaders from Iowa, the state that holds the first presidential nominating contest.

Saying that one will not run for President, even adamantly saying so, does not mean they won’t run.  Texas Governor Rick Perry swore that he had no interest in running and was not considering it until last month when he changed his mind.  But with Chris Christie it is probably true that he is not running.  Not now or ever.  But he is keeping his options open and recent subtle moves to moderate his image….his image, not his positions…….have proven that.

As exhibited in the clip below, Chris Christie has been hit the point where he is politically maturing.

His recent definition of leadership demonstrates that political maturity and it is both ingenious from a strategic political perspective as well as a managerial perspective.  In the clip, you will see how Christie justifies his often hard stances and blunt talk.  It a justification that directly appeals to Independent voters, a New Jersey voting bloc that no Republican can win elected office without substantial support from.

Christie’s remarks in the clip below are the type of thing that Independent voters on the national level would appreciate and the type of statement that could even ease the tension of those who may disagree with Christie by making them believe that at least he means what he says and says what he means.  That type of respect really does cross Party lines and it is also not often seen in politics.

And Christie knows this.  That is why he promoted the clip below in his own twitter when he tweeted the following:

“[VIDEO] I think people in this state like leaders regardless of their party. Leading is not a political strategy:”

Chris Christie is most likely not running for President, but there is absolutely no reason why he couldn’t and between his actions, his image and statements like the one below, maybe one day he actually should run.  As for now though, I know that we could use him in New Jersey, so hopefully he will  not give the idea any serious consideration until after he has completed his second consecutive term as Governor.Bookmark and Share

Paying Tribute To the Man Who Sold Reaganomics To Ronald Reagan

Jack F. KempBookmark and Share    Today marks the thirtieth anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s signing of the Kemp-Roth Tax Cut Act of 1981. The bill’s official legislative name was the Economic Recovery Tax Act. The legislation was authored by Jack Kemp in conjunction with Senator William Roth. Both men were co-sponsors of the legislation but Jack Kemp was the main architect and  the man  credited  for  “selling Reaganomics to Ronald Reagan.”    Then Congressman Jack Kemp, had introduced the Economic Recovery Tax Act in the House, several times before  the 1981 legislative session, but Democrat Congressional leaders and a Democrat President failed to move on it.

But once Reagan became President, he took the initiative to act on it and successfully pushed The Kemp-Roth bill through Congress. Were it not for Reagan, the economy-saving legislative initiative may never have passed, but were it not for Jack Kemp, it may never have existed in a way that was quite as strong and definitive as it wound up being.

The Kemp-Roth Tax Cut amended the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 and was responsible for encouraging the economic growth through:

  • The reduction of individual tax rates;
  • By expensing depreciable property; and
  • Creating incentives for savings and other small businesses.

The main features of the Act were responsible for:

  • Reducing the tax rates by 25% over three years;
  • Accelerating depreciation deductions;
  • Indexing of individual income tax parameters;
  • Excluding income of two earner married couple by 10 %;
  • Reducing windfall profit taxes; and
  • And expanding provisions for employees stock ownership plans.

Once enacted, the days of malaise that existed under the old tax code during the Carter years, turned into the days of rejuvenation. It took a while to actually turn the economy around but it didn’t take as long as many predicted and once the economy did turn the corner, it took off.

Jack Kemp is no longer with us , but if he was I am sure he would repeat the following words that he once spoke:

“Every time in this century we’ve lowered the tax rates across the board, on employment, on saving, investment and risk-taking in this economy, revenues went up, not down.”

And he would be right.

We need more leaders like Jack Kemp today, but until one is found, we have the Kemp legacy to help guide us, and hopefully we will soon have leaders who will see that light that Jack Kemp, William Roth, and Ronald Reagan once shed upon us with their faith in less government, less spending, less taxation, and more freedom.

Today however, on this thirtieth anniversary of the signing in to law of the 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act (ERTA), I ask that you pay homage to Jack Kemp by visiting a Facebook page that has been dedicated to him, his life, his work and his legacy. Please visit the Jack F. Kemp Facebook page and press the “like” button. Show your appreciation for him, his leadership and his belief in people more than government, and the free market than the government bureaucracy

Who Sits on the Deficit Reduction Committee Will Determine Who Has Won the Debt Ceiling Debate

Bookmark and Share    The pending multifaceted, two staged deal on raising the debt ceiling has received mixed reaction. Those on the left despise the fact that the deal does not include any immediate tax increases, or as they have been defined in this debate, revue increases. Those on the right despise the deal because it does not contain any significant reforms on entitlements and does no go far enough in proposing cuts. Then there are those who have no partisan political allegiances. These are for the most part, the average independent, middle of the road voter. These individuals understand that the proposal’s almost $3 trillion in deficit reduction over a ten year period is really only a drop in the bucket that does little to put a dent into our long term debt and is still not enough to maintain the United States’ AAA credit rating.

While the deal is not yet a done deal, despite conservative angst with the proposal and liberal disgust for the bill, it is more than likely going to pass in the Senate. So ultimately, look for passage of the bill.

That brings up another debate. One that is totally based on political perceptions and asks who won this deficit ceiling debate?

Seeing as how the bill raises our debt ceiling and does not reduce our debt significantly enough, there are no winners. At least not immediately. In fact the lack of immediate results makes us all losers here. But at the same time, it is clear that Republicans have settled on a deal that moves things in their direction. Democrats received none of the tax increases they wanted, they received none of the spending increases they wanted, and they were forced to accept some bitter pills. Some of these pills include the Republicans desire to get Democrats on record with a future vote on a balanced budget amendment and immediate spending caps. Another Republican victory in the proposal that is hard for the left to swallow is the automatic wholesale cut of up to $1.2 trillion that will occur if several terms of this bill are not met by the time Congress goes on their Thanksgiving recess in October.

So it would seem that Republicans have advanced their conservative agenda far more than liberals advanced their socialist agenda. Still, the need to reduce the deficit significantly enough to insure that our debt does not continue to exceed our GDP, has not been achieved.

Solving that problem will require deficit reduction actions that more than double the nearly $3 trillion proposed over the next decade. And that will have to be done in the not so distant future.

In the meantime, while Republicans did not have to compromise as much as Democrats were forced to, they are not yet winners in the debate. That will only be determined in October when the newly created Select Committee on Deficit Reduction proposes the $1.2 trillion in cuts and expense saving reforms that the bill demands. From the Republican perspective, the danger here is that this super committee is not limited to spending cuts and entitlement reforms. It could end up proposing tax increases (revenues). The committee could also shirk its responsibility to significantly reform entitlements, something that will be quite hard to pass the Senate anyway.

Given the flexibility that the Select Committee on Deficit Reduction has, the only way the G.O.P. will have proven that they were successful in this recent deficit ceiling debate will come from what the Select Committee on deficit Reduction comes up with.

The committee is to be comprised of 6 Democrats and 6 Republicans, presumable chosen by the legislative leaders of the perspective political Parties. Boehner and McConnell for Republicans, and President Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi for the Democrats.

The Party leaders will initially consider the usual cast of characters as candidates for this committee. People like Tom Kean, Erskine Bowles, Alan Simpson, Lee Hamilton, Judd Gregg, and other seemingly, now non-partisan, elder statesmen. Now while there may not necessarily be anything wrong with the usual cast of candidates for typical D.C., bureaucratic committees, the crisis we are in is not typical. Our debt crisis is so severe that for the first time in history, military experts warn that it has become a national security crisis. Furthermore; President Obama’s leadership has awakened the nation to just how distinct the political ideologies that divide our nation are. People have come to question what kind of nation America will be. Will we be the type of nation with a government that controls more and more of our lives with greater control, or do we want less spending, less government, and more freedom. Including economic freedom.

The ideological differences have become so divergent, that it is incumbent on the G.O.P. to make sure that the 6 members they choose for the deficit reduction commission are true conservatives who believe in limited government. Any one of those who doesn’t hold true to that belief, can easily defect and give the balance of power to the 6 liberals that Democrats will appoint to that committee.

So who should the G.O.P. appoint to the committee?

The first choice should be House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan.

Ryan is a must. He is a deficit hawk who is reasonable but passionate. He understands the need for entitlement reform, supports a balanced budget amendment, is brave enough to stand against the tide of popular opinion and not looking for anything more than getting the job done.

Another appointment should be Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.

Daniels has been there and done that when it comes to the budget, deficits, and spending. As Governor, his state has been one of the most economically stable states in the nation and he brings to the table some first hand experience with the excellent built-in, economic structural aspects of the budget process that Indiana has and that the United States would be wise to adopt.

Former Tennessee Fred Thompson is another excellent choice.

Thompson has proven to have a wealth of understanding for our existing problems and a unique down-to-earth and often blunt approach to the problem that can be refreshing.

Other good choices would be individuals who do not come from the often self-contained alternative reality that is Washington, D.C. People who are students of sound economic policy and people who have operated with and successfully crafted budgets that created jobs. The type of people who come from the real world……the private sector. People like Jack Welch, the most studied CEO of the 20th century, who had a successful 41- year career with the General Electric Company, one of the nation’s most preeminent names in the free market. Lawrence Kudlow is another refreshing suggestion.
