Happy Ramadan from The President and All of America

Bookmark and Share  Each year Muslims spend a month of daytime fasting, and evening prayers in celebration of Ramadan. It is one of two major Islamic holidays. The other being the Hajj which is celebrated by an annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
ramadanBoth holidays fall on different dates that are based on the Islamic lunar calendar. This year Ramadan celebration  began on August 22, 2009 and will finish on or around September 20, 2009.

As the holiday began, the White House recorded a special holiday message for the Muslim world. In it President Obama offered a brief history of the celebration and compared its traditions within his own Christian faith. The President even assured Muslims that he was trying to get a handle on the H1N1 virus before the millions all gather in Mecca for the Hajj.

In the end, the President offers hands of friendship and extended wishes for a Happy Ramadan from not just him, but from all Americans.
