Bookmark and Share  Yesterday, Congress refused to extend funding for the four-year-old Washington, D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. The program provides vouchers to nearly 2,000 low-income children and grants them the opportunity to attend successful religious or other private schools.

91572Despite over $100 billion dollars in stimulus funds that were allocated to education, Congress denied the underprivileged children of Washington, D.C. the opportunity for a better education and refused them $14 million dollars for school vouchers.

D.C. public schools are a dismal failure. Despite the efforts and demands of big labor, bureaucratic, teacher unions and despite a wealth of federal education aid, these public schools fail to create an environment and curriculum conducive for learning.  D.C. schools only have a reading proficiency of 39% and a 36 % proficiency in math. These are the basics yet the D.C. public education system is unable to teach D.C. students how to master them.

Regardless of how much money these schools are given or how many legislative initiatives are created for them, something is wrong. They are not working.

Yet Democrats refuse to allow the children of Washington, D.C. to escape from these failing schools.

Instead they stand shoulder to shoulder with teachers unions that are more concerned with benefits for themselves than the benefit of an effective learning experience.

Months ago, The Wall Street Journal pointed out that “teachers unions have put out the word to Congress that they want all vouchers for private schools that compete with their monopoly system shut down.”

Confirmation of that fact was articulated by D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton who, as early as this past June, vowed to put an end to school vouchers.

Yesterday, Democrats made it official.school_vouchersa

Despite being on a spending binge that funded more pork than ever, they rejected funding for the Opportunity Scholarship Program. Congress caved to the whims of teachers and crumbled under the control of Big Labor. They also turned their backs on children.

Take for example a little girl named Mercedes. She is the daughter of a single, working Mom and at 15, she attends a private school. The school voucher program helps her mother pay for that school. But thanks to the actions of Democrats this may be her last year in that school. The thought of returning to her local D.C. public school brings tears to her eyes. You see, not only does Mercedes appreciate her better education and higher test scores, she appreciates the safe and structured environment in her private school. In her old public school, Mercedes was molested.

Mercedes sees the move to eliminate school vouchers as both a threat to her future and her physical being.

Her mother understands and can’t stand the thought of her daughter going back to a place that failed to educate or protect her. So now Mercedes’ mother is out looking for a third job.

It is not known if that additional income will provided the money needed to keep Mercedes in private school but what Mercedes and her mother do know is that they will see very little of each other.

Yet this is the child friendly, family oriented agenda of today’s Congress.

This is the benefit of Democrat oriented legislative initiatives.

So while President Obama’s darling daughters, Sasha and Malika, can attend their D.C. private school, some of their less fortunate classmates may not be in class with them next year. Some of the parents of Sasha’s and Malika’s classmates may be working twice as hard and seeing their kids half as much but hey, President Obama promised us “change”.

Unfortunately the children of D.C. and their parents thought he meant a change for the better.

Memo to all students :

In order to assure the highest levels of quality work and productivity from students, it will be our policy to keep all students well taught through our program of SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TEACHING (S.H.I.T.). We are trying to give our students more S.H.I.T. than any other schools. If you feel that you do not receive your share of S.H.I.T. on the course, please see your lecturer. You will immediately placed at the top of the S.H.I.T. list and our lecturers are especially skilled at seeing you get all the S.H.I.T. you can handle. Students who don’t know S.H.I.T. will be placed in DEPARTMENTAL EDUCATIONAL EVALUATION PROGRAMS (D.E.E.P. S.H.I.T.). Those who fail to take D.E.E.P. S.H.I.T. seriously will have to go to EDUCATIONAL ATTITUDE TRAINING (E.A.T. S.H.I.T.). Since our lecturers took S.H.I.T. before they graduated, they don’t have to do S.H.I.T. anymore, as they are all full of S.H.I.T. already. If you are full of S.H.I.T., you may be intersted in a job teaching others. We can add your name to our BASIC UNDERSTANDING LECTURE LIST (B.U.L.L. S.H.I.T.). For students who are attending to pursue a carrier in management and consultancy, we will refer you to the department of MANAGERIAL OPERATIONAL RESEARCH EDUCATION (M.O.R.E. S.H.I.T.). This course emphasizes on how to manage M.O.R.E. S.H.I.T. If you have further questions, please direct them to our HEAD OF TEACHING SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING (H.O.T. S.H.I.T.)
